RULES FOR THE USERS OF THE __________ NETWORK
ALIASES
All users shall use their true names. "Handles" and aliases are
not permitted at any time.
CLUTTER
All users should strive to avoid lengthy quotation from other
messages, or use of elaborate art and signatures.
FLAMES
Users must refrain from "flaming." Flaming consists of name
calling, slurs, ad hominem responses to arguments or other rude
and insulting behavior. Excoriating rhetoric is not permitted.
Profanity is also prohibited. In the event that another user
"flames" users must refrain from replying to or censuring the
party in further messages, since this results in diverting the
flow of the conferences from useful traffic to flames.
In the event that a user is concerned about other's behavior, or
feels that message traffic is a violation of this rule may direct
brief, routed to moderator (non-public) messages to the moderator
of the conference.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE English is the official language of the
________________ NetWork network.
Message traffic should be in English.
LIMITATIONS ON USE OF NETWORK FOR PROFIT
Other than the limited exceptions stated below traffic for
pecuniary gain is prohibited. Non-commercial users may discuss
sales of items that they own. Businesses may no more than once
every week place a brief description of their services in
appropriate areas. In conferences devoted to particular products
this rule does not apply.
"PRIVATE" MESSAGING
The _________________ network does not have facilities for
"private" messages. Those requiring secure and private
communications should use alternative means to deliver such
communications. Messages in the administration conference are
routed so that only member sysops and other officials may gain
access.
COPYRIGHT AND RETRANSMISSION OF MESSAGES
The compilation of messages on the _________________ network,
including input by users is Copyrighted by the _________________
network. Other than brief excerpts, quoting or retransmission of
the message traffic of the _________________ network is
prohibited.
BARRING OF USERS
Users may be barred or locked out at the discretion of the
conference moderators and the network administrators. Individual
computer bulletin board systems retain the right to decline to
receive messages traffic from particular individuals in their
discretion. The facilities of the _______________ network may
not be used for illegal purposes. The _______________ network
reserves the right to temporarily or permanently suspend
operations at any time and for any reason.
PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS
The conference moderator is an official appointed by the Butterfly
NetWork network who generally "polices" the conference. The
moderator will insure that the spirit and letter of any network
regulations are followed.
Unless a violation is egregious, willful or considered by the
conference moderator to be an imminent threat to the network,
first violators will be warned by routed traffic to desist. Upon
further violations, a user may be placed on probation or
temporarily or permanently barred from the network, or some areas
of the network.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
The _______________ network is a non-profit association of
volunteers. In consideration of access to the network, all users
waive the right to make claims of any kind related to the
activities of the network, and assume the risk of all
transactions which they undertake herein. IT IS STRONGLY
RECOMMENDED THAT IF MESSAGES ARE CRITICAL THAT A COMMERCIAL
CARRIER BE USED.
RIGHT TO CHANGE
The _______________ network may change regulations at any time
by publishing notice of the changes in the affected conferences.
RESPONSE TO SUBPOENAS; COURT ORDERS
The _______________ network, if directed to do so by subpoena or
other court order may provide the contents of any messages,
including "routed" or "encrypted" messages to official authority.
